You must have been to Washington DC for the historical monuments and buildings, but have you ever visited during the National Cherry Blossom Festival? This is a 3 to 4 weeklong festival that begins at the end of March every year and attracts thousands of people from all over the country to enjoy and marvel at the beauty of the cherry blossoms. Cherry blossoms are native to Japan and 3,000 cherry blossom trees were gifted by them to America in the 1900s. Ever since then, Washington DC is a major place in America where these gorgeous trees bloom.
Here is why you need to be heading to DC for the National Cherry Blossom Festival:
1. It Marks the Coming of Spring
Spring comes for a brief period once a year and you must enjoy Mother Nature’s gift by viewing the breathtaking beauty of the cherry blossom trees. They only bloom and blossom is during springtime, so you only have a limited amount of time when you can see them. So if you are wondering where to go for spring break, do keep this in mind.
2. A Fun-Filled Festival
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an entire event on its own that keeps one busy and entertained for as long as they are there. There are parades, galas, children’s activities, etc. The festival kick-starts with a parade, followed by a cherry blossom grand ball and other events like the kite festival, where they even have a ‘kite doctor’ who fixes any broken kites. At the festival, you also find street art, food, beautiful decorations, shops and concerts.
Everything is pink and white, paying homage to the colors of the cherry blossom flowers. People can sit and have their picnics under the trees and simply enjoy everything. The best place to see all the festivities from afar can be from the City Center DC, which has all the designer stores and is decorated in pink. The decoration itself is worth a visit.
3. It’s a Great Place to Visit with Anyone
Whether you are going with your friends, your significant other or your entire family, this festival is the place to be. The best part is that it is quite family-friendly, so the kids won’t get bored either.
4. Petalpalooza
This is an event that happens for a day and has so many exciting things to offer such as live music, a drinking garden, product giveaways and half-mile long shops and street food. The fireworks start at 8:30 pm at the Southwest Waterfront, so be sure to find yourself a good spot for an awesome view.
5. At the National Cherry Blossom Festival, We Wear Pink!
You will see pink in all shades at the festival to represent the cherry blossoms, so go crazy with all the pink clothes you have. Although there isn’t any rule regarding this, you will see lots of people donning their best pink outfits.
